Scouts, Parents, Leaders and Supporters Urge Local Councils to Support Youth Equality Resolution
Events Hosted Across the Country Call for the End of Discrimination
May 10, 2013 (USA) – Today,Scouts, Scout leaders, parents, and supporters united to urge their locals Boy Scouts councils to support the Boy Scouts of America (BSA)’s resolution that would ensure no youth would ever again be denied membership on the basis of sexual orientation. These events are part of the national campaign Scouts for Equality, together with GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign and others, has organized to generate support to end discrimination with the BSA.
“With less than two weeks until the vote, today’s ‘Council Day of Action’ is about our members urging local councils to support this historic resolution,” said Zach Wahls, Eagle Scout and Founder of Scouts for Equality. “Yesterday’s Washington Post/ABC News poll found that there is overwhelming support for this resolution – 63 percent of America is calling for this change and it is our hope that councils across America will listen.”
Across the country, many of the organization’s 11,000 members are participating in events including rallies, meetings with councils and community gatherings. Since its founding in June 2012, the campaign has collected almost 1.8 million signatures and convinced many of the BSA’s key funders to suspend contributions until discrimination within the organization ends.
“Scouts for Equality will continue its efforts until discrimination is no longer a word associated with the BSA,” said Wahls. “Today across the country our members are united by one common goal – to make the BSA organization the strongest it can be.”
