Spring Gathering 2016
SFE Spring Gathering 2016
A national gathering for all supporters of inclusive Scouting.
In the middle of April, 2015, over 40 SFE supporters from all corners of the country traveled to Estes Park, Colorado for the inaugural Scouts for Equality “Spring Gathering.” This weekend retreat in the mountains had been planned as an opportunity to meet longtime volunteers in person, to network with new supporters, and to recognize individuals with awards. As the weekend unfolded, we quickly realized it was so much more than that. The stories that were shared broke our hearts and deepened our resolve to fight for equality in Scouting. The training sessions invigorated new and seasoned volunteers alike, giving them tangible skills to bring back to their local communities. And casual interactions planted seeds for greater things to come.
The theme of this year’s Spring Gathering was “Building Scouting.” The weekend event built upon lessons learned from last year, and served as the launching point for our new mission of growing inclusive Scouting. Participants heard directly from our Executive Director, along with volunteer staff and members of our Board of Directors, about how to take advantage of this window of opportunity for growing inclusive Scouting in their communities.
Through a series of workshops and fireside chats, participants left feeling energized and prepared to be a leader in making Scouting more inclusive and welcoming in their communities. Educational workshops featured programs such information on SFE trainings, discussions on how to grow inclusive Scouting in underserved communities, and how to work with volunteers and professionals in the Boy Scouts of America to build collaborative relationships.
