UPS Postpones Donations to the Boy Scouts

More bad news for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), as a major donor has announced plans to sever funding to the organization on account of a controversial anti-gay policy.
The United Parcel Service (UPS), Inc. will soon adopt a non-discrimination policy that disqualifies the BSA from future funding, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) reports. UPS follows the Intel Foundation in withdrawing corporate sponsorship from the BSA, GLAAD officials note in an email statement.

Intel Pauses Donations Over BSA’s Anti-Gay Policy

In two days, Scouts for Equality amassed over 31,000 petition signatures asking Intel to stop its donations to the Boy Scouts of America until they end their policy of discrimination. Intel, holding true to their 100% rating by the Human Rights Campaign, quickly responded and has agreed to require recipients of their funding to sign a statement of non-discrimination.
As the largest corporate donor to the Boy Scouts, the loss of Intel sends a clear message to the BSA that discrimination is wrong, and that “A Scout is Equal.”

United Way Drops Funding for PA Boy Scouts

“The last time we discussed the Boy Scouts’ compliance with our non-discrimination policy was in 2000,” UWCR president and CEO Joseph Capita said in a news release. “Over the last 12 years our community has changed and although we accepted the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy as meeting our non-discrimination policy 12 years ago, we no longer believe we can accept that position as complying with our policies.”

Boy Scouts reaffirm their intolerant ban on gays

On Tuesday, July 17, the BSA affirmed its ban on openly gay Scouts and gay and lesbian Scout Leaders, announcing that an eleven member secret committee had unanimously voted to uphold the ban. Scouts for Equality immediately pushed back, and co-founder Zach Wahls called on the BSA to put the resolution up for a vote before its Executive Board via a Change.org petition that has since received more than 130,000 signatures.
